Happy 2012! Lacy Shawl

I have a new crochet pattern to share - a lacy shawl that can also be worn as a scarf.  I love these types of shawl/scarves!  The lacy, open stitches let it be used as a scarf with a coat when you're outside and then opened up to use inside as a shawl if things get a bit chilly.  And if you're in an area where you're getting sick of winter and your winter wear, crochet it up in bright, uplifting colors!

When finished it measures approximately 48 by 18 inches.

Materials:
*3 skeins Serenity Garden Yarn (Premier Yarns), color Gems - this is a designation 2 (fine) yarn in case you're substituting
*Size G crochet hook
Gauge:  Work sample (without edging):  19 single crochet foundation stitches, rows 1 - 7.  Measures 5 x 2 1/4 inches.

Foundation Row:  Work 163 single crochet foundation stitches.  To change size, add or subtract 18 stitches to lengthen or shorten.

Row 1:  Chain 5 and turn (Counts as first dc and 2ch).  Skip first two stitches and dc in third stitch.  *Chain 2, skip 2 stitches, dc in next stitch.  Repeat from * to end of row, ending with a dc.

Row 2:  Chain 3 and turn (counts as first dc).  *Dc twice in ch2 space, ch 1, skip 1 stitch.  Repeat from * to end of row, ending with 3dc.

Row 3:  Chain 1 and turn.  Sc in each stitch across row.

Row 4:  Chain 4 and turn (counts as first dc and 1ch).  Skip first stitch and dc in second stitch.  *Chain 1, skip 1 stitch, dc in next stitch.  Repeat from * to end of row, ending with a dc.

Row 5:  Chain 1 and turn.  Sc in each stitch across row.

Row 6:  Chain 3 and turn (counts as first dc).  Dc in next two stitches.  *Chain 1, skip 1 stitch, 2dc.  Repeat from * to end of row, ending with 3dc.

Row 7:  Chain 5 and turn (counts as first dc and 2 ch).  Dc in first chain space.  *Chain 2, dc in chain space.  Repeat from * to end of row, ending with a dc.

Repeat Rows 2 through 7 six times.

Next row:  Chain 1 and turn.  *Sc in dc, two sc in chain 2 space, sc in next stitch.  Repeat from * to end of row.

Edging:  Chain 1 and do not turn.  Work the following stitch pattern (a 2 chain picot) evenly across side:  *Two sc, 2ch, slip stitch through sc just made and chain on hook.  Repeat from * to end of side.  Put three stitches from pattern in corner, work pattern across foundation row.  Put three stitches from pattern in corner, work pattern evenly across the other side.  Put three stitches from pattern in corner, work pattern across top.  Slip stitch to first sc and tie off.

Happy Creating!  Deborah

  1. I'm having trouble taking the survey here. The first question won't let me answer yes, only no. Is it just me? I tried refreshing.

  2. Hmmm - the yes button seems to be a little touchy. I got it to work if I kept moving the cursor around it until the yes line turned gray. I'll work on seeing if it works better with a link versus being embedded.

  3. Okay - the first answer box on each page works best if you put your cursor just below the box. I've added a link that goes directly to the survey. Thank you for trying, Heidianna - I really appreciate your help. Hopefully this will work better!

    Beautiful!
Took the survey too. I majored in fine arts and never hurts to get a little input.
Best of luck and thank you for the creativity!

  9. Fantastic, cheery scarf! I just made myself a snuggly scarf in earth tones, but this is a definite WOW! It looks like I found my next crocheting project. Now I have to find a yarn like this in Germany...

I took the survey, too. As might be expected, I requested a header for your tutorials! I prefer quick access to good ideas and it seems that the only option currently available is to look through the archives. Of course that was very enlightening and I'll have to wander around here a bit more.

  10. Thank you! Yes - a header with tutorials listed by fiber art form is a great idea and has been on my to-do list for awhile. I'll start working on it, however it'll take time! In the meantime, if you look for the search box on the left hand column (right below the archive) you can enter broad categories, such as "embroidery," and you'll get a list of all tutorials that include that word. That's how I find past posts I want to refer to, instead of going through my humongous post list!

    1. Thank you! I bought mine at JoAnne's. I saw it on Amazon a little while ago and I see by Googling "Serenity Garden Yarns Gems" that there are several online yarn stores with it. It is a gorgeous yarn, isn't it!!

  12. I am almost done making this scarf/shawl and I love it. However, now I wish it was longer than the 48". Do you have any suggestions to add on to it before the edging? I have recently returned to crocheting and still consider myself a beginner, so I do not know if this is possible. Thank you for the pattern and for any help you can give me!

    1. Hmmm ... I don't have an easy answer to this question! I have made scarves longer by adding rows of another pattern to each end, but I'm not sure that would look right with this pattern. If you make another one and want to it longer, you can do so by adding groups of 18 single crochet foundation stitches.
