Friday Inspiration - Fiber Art International 2013

I really enjoy looking at mixed fiber art exhibits - I always come away with a new way of looking at the field and new ideas for using fiber materials in different and unusual ways.  So if I were in Pittsburgh, I would be visiting Fiber Art International 2013 numerous times!

Maggie Smith, Her Hair Grows! 2012. Nuno felted silk chiffon and Merino wool, stitched.
Stephen Sidelinger, Pirates #1, 2011. Embroidery on cotton.
The Pittsburgh Center for the Arts currently hosting this years showing of 81 objects by 64 different artists - this is from 1200 entries submitted by 525 artists.  There's everything from traditional techniques such as quilting and embroidery to more unusual ways of using fibers, like button collage and knitted wax that is then used to cast glass.

Elin Nobel, Fugitive Pieces 9, 2012.  Shibori.

If you're in the area, the exhibit runs until August 18, 2013.  After that is travels to the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles from November 6, 2013 to January 19, 2014 and then on to the Franklin G. Burroughs - Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in 2014.  And if you're not able to see it in person, the entire exhibit is online here.  Very much worth a look - I guarantee you'll see ways of using fibers you've never thought of!

Happy Creating!  Deborah
