Wednesday Sewing - Party Dress Reincarnated into A Princess!

A couple years ago, I found this great, slinky party dress at Goodwill on sale for $1.00.  It was a size 2 and there's no hope in this lifetime that I'll EVER fit in that, but it was gorgeous - and cheap!  Well, little c's getting into dress-up lately and loves sparkles and anything that looks like it could be a "princess dress."  I did a little cutting and sewing and it turned out ridiculously easy to make some great dress-up clothes!

First, measure up from the bottom of the dress to make a long skirt.  This measurement will vary depending on the size of your potential princess.  Since this dress had a lining, I pinned through all layers along that line.

3.  Cut the dress in two along that line.  Cut down the front of the top portion to make a vest.

4.  Turn under along the front and bottom of the vest and sew.

Part one of the princess outfit is done!

6.  For the skirt, turn the top under about 1 inch and sew along the bottom, leaving an opening for elastic.  Cut 3/4 inch elastic the waist measurement of your princess plus one inch.

7.  Insert the elastic, overlap it 1/2 inch, and sew the elastic together.  You can finish by sewing the seam shut or leave the opening so you can adjust the elastic as your princess grows.

Little c is adamant that a princess needs a crown, so we set about making one.  I measured around her head and added one inch.  Using that measurement, I cut two long rectangles of felt that were about 6 inches wide.

I folded the rectangles in half ...

And free hand cut a crown shape.

When opened up, this is what I had.

I sewed the two pieces together using a blanket stitch and 6 strands of embroidery floss.

I overlapped the ends, sewed it together in the back, and helped little c glue on a whole package of rhinestone jewels.  We used Aileen's Jewel-It.

And here's the busy princess getting ready to make a "tape picture!"

Happy Creating!  Deborah

  1. Thank you so much for sharing this great idea! My 7 year old loves to play dress up but she has outgrown all of our dress up clothes. She also likes to sew. I see a trip to the thrift store in our future!
